London Power Tunnels Phase 2

Murphy, working as part of the HOCHTIEF-MURPHY Joint Venture (HMJV), is delivering two major works packages as part of National Grid’s circa £1bn scheme to replace existing cable infrastructure which is reaching the end of its life. Package 2 comprises design and construction of approximately 33km of tunnel from Wimbledon to Crayford and eight shafts, through the full range of the London geology.


Package 5 comprises design and construction of the operational headhouses as well as associated mechanical/electrical systems. Latest milestones achieved include:


  • Completed all 33km of tunnel.
  • Fitted out tunnel with permanent cable brackets, monorail and auxiliary cables using HMJV’s innovative Tunnel Auxiliaries Fit Out System (TAFOS).
  • Handed over all sectional completions to date, on or ahead of contract dates.
